What’s New in the 2019 4Runner?

Toyota’s off-roading champion returns for the 2019 model year with a few changes like the addition of the new Limited Nightshade Edition trim, which features blacked-out interior and exterior styling elements. The TRD Pro trim sees the addition of new Fox shock absorbers, skid plates and a roof rack, and a standard premium JBL audio system.

Toyota 4Runner History

Toyota introduced the 4Runner in 1984 as an SUV that could deliver the capability associated with 4WD pickups along with the comfort of passenger-oriented cars. The first generation of the 4Runner used a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. In 1986, Toyota improved ride quality and ground clearance with a Hi-Trac front suspension. In 1988, a 3-liter V6 was added, helping the 4Runner excel off road. The second generation in 1989 featured a completely redesigned Toyota 4Runner with styling that was more aggressive and muscular. At this point, you could choose two or four doors, 2WD or 4WD, and a 4- or 6-cylinder engine. The 1995 4Runner began the third generation with new styling inside and out, a new chassis, new engines, and enhanced safety features. At this point, there were two engines and three trim levels.

For the fourth generation, the 2002 Toyota 4Runner got more spacious and more powerful with a boost to efficiency, as well. Navigation and a backup camera were both introduced in 2004. In the next few years, Toyota expanded the list of exterior color options and added available power adjustable seats. The fifth generation began with the 2010 model year, offering even more power and efficiency along with a more rugged exterior. The cargo space was also completely redesigned, making the 4Runner more versatile and comfortable. Entune Audio was added in 2012, with updated styling for 2014 and the TRD Pro arriving in 2015. The 2016 model added an optional sliding rear cargo deck with the ability to support 440 pounds.
