The 1996 Toyota RAV4 claimed the title of first crossover SUV to be available in North America. It was based on the same platform as the Corolla and has gone through multiple generations. Within the first few years, Toyota updated the interior styling, headlights, taillights, and grille. A RAV4 convertible arrived in 1998, and few changes were made during the following years. The 2001 RAV4 got larger as well as more powerful with updated styling.
For 2004, Toyota gave the RAV4 a mid-cycle update that included stylistic changes, traction control, stability control, antilock brakes, multiple extra airbags, six speakers, and a 161-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. In 2006, the RAV4 got a bigger frame that also increased the interior space, along with a new V6. Front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags were added for 2007.
