What’s New in the 2019 Tundra?

The 2019 Tundra lineup is sporting a familiar variation that took a year off from the market last year: the TRD Pro. This performance-oriented Tundra trim features signature Fox shocks as well as valuable updates like the addition of standard Toyota Safety Sense P, dual exhaust with black chrome tips, a retro-style grille, and 18-inch BBS alloy wheels that shave off an impressive 14 pounds from the Tundra’s body weight.

For shoppers who like the ability to customize, the Tundra is the perfect choice. You can select among six trim levels – SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, and TRD Pro – and that’s just the start. Choose from Double Cab and CrewMax, Short Bed, Standard Bed, and Long Bed. Engine options range from a 4.6L V8 to a 5.7L V8 Flex Fuel.

And while this truck is tough, rugged, and ready for anything, it’s also equipped for comfortable and accommodating travels, with a well-equipped cabin and ample comfort and convenience amenities you’re sure to love.

History of the Toyota Tundra

The Toyota Tundra debuted with its 2000 model. It was a bit larger than the T100 it replaced and had the biggest initial vehicle sales of any Toyota up to that time. It was offered with a 3.4L V6 or a 4.7L V8, with a TRD supercharger offered for the V6 from the start and the V8 the following year. The Double Cab joined the lineup in 2004, a year after some updates to the grille. 2005 saw a new 4L V6 engine and updates to the existing V8 that included variable valve timing technology. This year also saw the 5-speed manual become a 6-speed and the 4-speed automatic become a 5-speed. At the end of the first generation, the Toyota Tundra could tow between 6,900 and 7,100 pounds, depending on the configuration.

Toyota showed off the second-generation Tundra during the 2006 Chicago Auto Show, complete with styling cues from the midsize Tacoma and the Toyota FTX concept. It stood out with fenders that bulged in a way that resembled biceps. The towing capacity increased to more than 10,000 pounds, while the payload passed 2,000. There was a new 5.7L V8 with a 6-speed automatic, while the 4.7L V8 and 4L V6 carried over. When this Tundra became available in 2007, it had 31 different configurations between the wheelbases, transmissions, cabs, and bed lengths.

Toyota has continued to change and evolve the Tundra to reflect the changing expectations and desires of consumers. Today’s Tundra models boast cutting-edge tech features, safety equipment, and driver assistance amenities that make it the total package for full-size truck buyers seeking one of the best pickups on the market today.
